The Haringey Community and Police Consultative Group (the Group) is a borough wide consultative group funded by the independent Metropolitan Police Authority. The Group was initially established in 1985 after the riots in London and Lord Scarmans’s Report, recommending that dialogue between the police and the community actually became mandatory. The key objective of the Group is to undertake community engagement that encompasses a variety of approaches strategic level (service-wide, pan-London) - operational level (borough policing) - and community level (neighbourhood and ward) empowering residents to both express their views and influence how their particular policing needs and priorities are met.
What do we do?
The Group provides effective ways for the community of Haringey to understand and influence the policing decisions and policies that affect them, and to hold the Metropolitan Police Service to account for the service at the local level.
- Makes arrangements to carry out local consultation between the communities and the police within the London Borough of Haringey and to obtain the views of local people to ensure that police decisions reflect their concerns and needs.
- Make arrangements to engage, educate and exchange information with young people residing and commuting to Haringey.
- Runs a Community Observers scheme in order to observe police operations.
- Work in partnership with the borough’s Safer Neigbourhood Teams, and appoint members representation on every Ward Panel in Haringey.
- Engage with local stakeholders including the local Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership in order to influence local decisions about community safety and crime prevention, and bring key local issues to the attention of the Metropolitan Police Authority.
- Runs a Young People & Police Relations Project enabling the ongoing involvement of young people in policy-and-decision-making in Haringey, rather than emphasising one-off or self-contained interventions to improve particular aspects of young people lives
- Make representations to the Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis or the Metropolitan Police Authority about matters outside the jurisdiction of the Borough Commander
- Provide opportunities through public forums for effective community/ police consultation; enabling the community to debate and question tentative policing policies, and policing issues of local concern.
- Consult, promote and carryout surveys on behalf of statutory partners and community organisations.
- Promotes good relationship between the police and community in Haringey on policing and associated matters.
Mission Statement
The Haringey Community & Police Consultative Group works in partnership with individuals and organisations for a fair and just society which values diversity and gives everyone an equal chance to work, learn and live free from discrimination, prejudice, and racism.
