The Haringey Community & Police Consultative Group prides itself on developing and delivering an effective Young People and Police Relations Project in the London Borough of Haringey. This part of the site is specifically for Haringey's young people. It delivers information about the project, useful guidance on crime prevention and how to stay safe. The site also offers advice such as what to do if your mobile phone is stolen or if you are being bullied.

Youth & Police Relations Project

Since November 2004 the Haringey Community & Police Consultative Group has been working with a core group of 40 young people from across the borough of Haringey.  Its first mission was to gage their feelings on the crime within the borough and what solutions they feel can be implemented. These young people ranged between 10 – 21 years and mainly derive from the highest crime rate wards within the borough. Many of them fell into various categories of social exclusion including those known to the Youth Offending Service, looked after care and various inclusion/behaviour programmes within the borough.

The young people stated that they felt the type of crime and the levels of youth, gun and knife crime in the borough were reaching an undesirable limit. Most feared becoming victims of crime and all did not feel confident or satisfied with the services of the police.

It is the belief of the project that one of the factors that need to be addressed in tackling youth, gun and knife crime is to build better cohesion between different communities, stakeholders, the police and young people.

The key aims of the project are:
  • Engaging young people in policy and decision making
  • Relationships, young people and parents
  • Preventing children and young people from committing crime.
  • Making sure services are well
The scheme is being developed by the Haringey Community & Police Consultative Group in partnership with its Young People & Police Relations Steering Group, Haringey Community Safety Partnership, Children and Young People’s Service, the Kurdish Advice Centre, Community Groups, the Metropolitan   Police Authority,  the Metropolitan Police Service/School Liaison, Youth Offending Service, Haringey Peace Alliance, Leaders in Training and CONEL  This collaborative partnership shall enable the development of knowledge, skills and values that can bring about personal and social change.
